Sleeplessness
Through Hypnotherapy I sometimes come into contact with those who suffer with sleeplessness. Insomnia or sleeplessness is a common and very debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Basically it’s characterised by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early. And this can lead to:
- Not feeling rested after sleep
- Daytime tiredness or sleepiness
- Irritability, depression, or anxiety
- Difficulty remembering, paying attention or focusing on tasks
- Increased errors or accidents
- Poor judgement
- Ongoing worries about sleep
Sleep Deprivation
Sleep deprivation can activate the endocannabinoid (eCB) system in the brain (also activated by marijuana) which increases hunger and appetite leading to weigh gain.
While you sleep, there are many important processes that happen, including:
- Muscle repair
- Protein synthesis
- Tissue growth
- Hormone release
When you sleep, you allow your body to repair and rebuild. During this time, the body is able to clear debris from the lymphatic system which boosts the immune system.
Sleep is also important in the processing of memories. While asleep we analyse the day, organise thoughts and file away memories. If we don’t sleep, this can disrupt the creation of memories both new ones and the movement of short term memory into long term ones.
Advice and Tips
Now, small changes to your night time routine can result in a huge health benefit:
- Establish a realistic bedtime and stick to it every night, even on the weekends.
- Maintain comfortable temperature settings and low light levels in your bedroom.
- Consider a “screen ban” on televisions, computers and tablets, cell phones, and other electronic devices in your bedroom.
- Abstain from caffeine, alcohol, and large meals in the hours leading up to bedtime.
- Refrain from using tobacco at any time of day or night.
- Exercise during the day; this can help you wind down in the evening and prepare for sleep
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy can be highly effective for many people. Insomnia doesn’t have to control your life. As Christina Applegate (American Actress) put it, “If you have insomnia, it’s important to know you’re not alone; there are millions of people also struggling with their sleep. Talk about what you’re going through with others, including your doctor, and continue trying new things to help manage your insomnia”.
Hypnotherapy offers a drug free and effective way to combat sleeplessness by addressing the root causes and promoting relaxation. If you’re struggling with insomnia, consider exploring hypnotherapy as a pathway to better sleep and improved overall well-being. Contact me to find out more.
