How much is too much meat?

Did you know that humans didn’t always eat meat? Scientists have looked at early human’s bones and teeth and discovered several major dietary changes in human evolution. These include starting to meat eating, cooking, and changes associated with plant and animal domestication (farming and eating diary).

It’s very rare for a species to change its diet so radically. The only other species I can think of is the panda. They are a member of the bear family and have the digestive system of a carnivore, but they depend almost entirely on bamboo.  Bamboo has very little nutritional value, so pandas eat 12-38kg every day to meet their needs.

More gatherer than hunter

Studies of modern-day hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa show that meat eating is a rarity. The Hadza and Kung bushmen of Africa, for example, fail to get meat more than half the time when they hunt with bows and arrows. It would have been even harder for our ancestors who didn’t have these weapons.

“Everybody thinks you wander out into the savanna and there are antelopes everywhere, just waiting for you to bonk them on the head,” says Paleoanthropologist Alison Brooks of George Washington University, an expert on the Dobe Kung of Botswana.

How much meat should I eat?

A healthy balanced diet can include protein from meat. But it can also come from fish and eggs or non-animal sources such as beans and pulses. Meats such as chicken, pork, lamb and beef are all rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. Red meat provides us with iron, zinc and B vitamins. Meat is also one of the main sources of vitamin B12 in the diet.

Red meat includes beef, lamb, mutton, pork, veal, venison and goat. It is recommended that you do not eat too much red meat, processed meat or meat as they can be high in saturated fats and can lead to health problems. Eating too much processed meat and red meat probably increases your risk of bowel (colorectal) cancer. It can be high in salt and eating too much salt can increase your risk of high blood pressure and cholesterol. Processed meat is any meat that has been preserved. Methods include smoking, curing, salting or adding preservatives. This can include sausages, bacon, ham and deli meat.

Conclusion

You can cut down by eating smaller portions of red or processed swapping them for alternative sources of protein such as from pulses. Hypnotherapy can help you with permanently changing your lifestyle and diet. If you would like to find out more about it, then contact me.
